The US will reduce Colorado River water for Mexico in 2026. Will this affect Baja California?

The United States government will reduce the distribution of the Colorado River to Mexico in 2026, reported the Secretariat for Water Management, Sanitation, and Protection of Baja California.

According to the agency, the United States Bureau of Reclamation determined that the annual allocation for Mexico will be just over 1.6 billion cubic meters, representing a reduction of 62 million cubic meters of water due to low storage conditions.

Will there be any impact from the Colorado River’s water reduction?

The director of the Tijuana State Commission of Public Services (CESPT), Jesús García, explained that one of the impacts will be the cancellation of the emergency connection with the United States in the Otay area. However, he clarified that this connection has not been used in the last three years and corresponds to an extraordinary supply.

State authorities indicated that the adjustments planned for 2026 will be smaller than those established for 2025. They also emphasized that with the modernization of the Río Colorado-Tijuana Aqueduct and the installation of new wells in the Mesa Arenosa de Mexicali region, no impact on the water supply in Baja California municipalities is expected.

Jesús García pointed out that, to date, no problems have been reported with the regular supply, nor have water rationing been implemented in Tijuana, emphasizing that service interruptions are due solely to aqueduct repairs or localized leaks.
