Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that her administration is preparing a decree to establish a free day of admission to the archaeological sites of Tulum, following the model used by the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) at other sites in the country.

“Yes, we are looking at it the same way we do at the archaeological sites, where Sunday is free. The idea is to have a free day so people don’t have to pay to enter. So, we are reviewing it very soon,” Sheinbaum stated, when questioned about the recent charges for access to the site. She emphasized that the decree can be implemented without the need for complicated legal reforms.

The announcement comes amid a tense climate at the archaeological site of Tulum, where INAH staff are accusing Grupo Mundo Maya, a public company linked to the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena), of assuming functions that by law correspond to the institute, such as ticket sales. Although authorities have argued that the new scheme streamlines access by including admission to the archaeological site, Tulum National Park, and Jaguar Park in a single ticket starting August 10, residents and visitors have expressed dissatisfaction with fees and possible noncompliance with exemptions.

The measure seeks to ensure that Mexican families and national visitors can access the cultural heritage site for at least one day free of charge, reinforcing cultural equity and disseminating the Mayan legacy.
