Residents of at least 10 communities in the municipalities of Constancia del Rosario and Putla de Guerrero, located on the border of the Sierra Sur and Mixteca regions, have been cut off for two days due to landslides caused by constant rains. Authorities and residents are requesting support from the Oaxaca Roads and Well-being Directorate.

“We have been without vehicle traffic for two days. We request support from Director Moisés Salazar to rehabilitate our road and open the section closed by the landslide,” requested the families traveling from Llano Nopal to Santa Cruz Río Venado, belonging to the municipalities of Putla and Constancia del Rosario.

The intense rains of recent days caused a large-scale landslide that has completely blocked the dirt road leading to the Triqui communities of Río Humo, Loma Cacique, Río Ceniza, Llano de Piedra, Santa Cruz Río Venado, Río Lagarto, Cerro Pájaro, Llano Grande, and Lázaro Cárdenas. This is also the case with the Ñu’u Savi community of San José Yosocañú, nestled in the Sierra, on the border with the state of Guerrero.

The highway is also part of the communication route for families from Santa Cruz Yucucani and Juquila Yucucani in the state of Guerrero, who travel to the municipality of Putla to stock up on food.

“The hill collapsed, and there’s no way through. We also don’t have the machinery to remove all that dirt and mud. Furthermore, the road, which was completely closed, needs to be opened further,” said the authorities of these communities.

In this situation, the families requested urgent support from the Oaxaca Roads for Well-being Directorate (CABIEN) to send machinery to rehabilitate this section, which they claim has been abandoned for at least 10 years.

“In recent years, the government has only ordered the removal of small landslides and mudslides, but everything has been temporary. However, this landslide is too large and we can’t remove it. It’s been two days now, and people need the right of way to go shopping and sell food,” they emphasized.

The Triqui and Ñu’u Savi communities located in this area are among the most marginalized in Mexico, with no alternative means of communication. The distance from the capital of the state of Oaxaca to San José Yosocañú is at least 300 kilometers, part of which is dirt road in impassable conditions.
