The Puerto Vallarta government is considering creating a new tax for those who rent accommodations through digital platforms, such as Airbnb, a measure that would be part of the financial planning for the 2026 fiscal year.
Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González confirmed that the proposal seeks to balance the conditions of the tourism market, considering that hotels, hostels, and boutique hotels already comply with tax burdens. “It’s only fair that these platforms also contribute,” he stated in an interview with local media.
Although it has not been determined whether the tax would fall on the property owners who offer accommodations or on the transnational companies that operate these platforms, Munguía emphasized that the issue is under analysis and represents a potential source of additional revenue to strengthen municipal finances.
Regarding expected revenue, the mayor acknowledged that there is no exact projection yet, although it is anticipated that the new tax could generate several million pesos annually.
The initiative is part of the City Council’s strategy to guarantee greater competitiveness in the tourism sector and ensure that those involved in this economic activity contribute equitably to the city’s development.
