The presence of sargassum in Cancún, Quintana Roo, has increased in recent days, according to Jesús Antonio Riveroll Ribbon, director of Municipal Civil Protection in Benito Juárez, who noted that warming seawater is one of the main factors favoring its arrival.
The official explained that this algae originates from the Sargasso Sea and that current weather conditions, such as rising water temperatures, waves, and westerly winds, are driving its movement toward the coasts of the Mexican Caribbean.
Riveroll Ribbon indicated that a considerable amount of sargassum is expected, similar to or greater than in critical years such as 2019 and 2020, when the phenomenon reached historic levels.
