A priest was the victim of a violent robbery at his home in the Tixcacal Opichén neighborhood, west of Mérida, Yucatán. According to the official report, two individuals entered his home, brutally beat him, tied his hands and feet, and locked him in the bathroom. They then robbed him of more than 62,000 pesos in cash, as well as a cell phone and personal documents.
The priest, identified as E.V.P., suffered severe head and body injuries, according to agents from the State Investigation Police (PEI) and the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE).
The Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) reported the arrest of Ángel Gabriel “N,” a 20-year-old painter by trade, identified as one of the alleged perpetrators of the robbery. The individual was captured following an arrest warrant issued by a local judge and has already been handed over to the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities continue their investigation to locate the second suspect, who managed to escape after the attack.
How did the priest get attacked?
According to information gathered by the PEI, the attackers hit the priest on the head and body, threatened to harm him more if he looked at them, and then tied him up with cables, placing a rag over his mouth to prevent him from screaming. They then dragged him to the bathroom, where they locked him in while they ransacked the home.
The stolen amount amounts to 62,500 pesos in cash, in addition to a cell phone and the priest’s personal documents.
Ángel Gabriel “N” will face charges for aggravated robbery with violence, a crime that in Yucatán can carry penalties of up to 20 years in prison, especially when committed in a home and with physical aggression against the victim.
