Given the growing number of cars with foreign license plates in Nuevo León, state authorities announced that vehicles circulating under this scheme will be inspected as part of a regularization and road safety strategy.
According to official estimates, around 600,000 vehicles with foreign license plates circulate in the state, of which approximately 100,000 are temporary vehicles. The remaining 500,000 vehicles belong to Nuevo León residents.
The problem is compounded because 80 percent of these drivers, or approximately 400,000, lack vehicle identification or valid license plates, which complicates the verification of ownership and makes it difficult to enforce penalties for violations or accidents.
According to data from the Nuevo León Citizen Observatory of Road Safety, 22 percent of cars involved in road accidents have foreign license plates, reinforcing the need for clear and up-to-date information on their owners.
Authorities also noted that, in many cases, high-end vehicles or those belonging to legal entities have been registered in other states to evade fines, taxes, and local vehicle penalties.
How will authorities respond to this?
As part of the state strategy, the following measures will be implemented:
Awareness campaigns to inform motorists about the importance of regularizing their status.
A regularization program with administrative facilities for those who choose to comply with the regulations.
Road operations to detect vehicles with irregularities on their license plates.
