In addition to being a connection point for rail freight transport, Querétaro will regain its role as the country’s hub for passenger trains, declared Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

With the train linking Mexico City with Querétaro, the central state will become a hub connecting states in the Bajío region and the north of the country, the president stated during her visit to Querétaro as part of her tour to report on her first year in office.

“Querétaro will regain its role as the country’s hub for passenger trains. It continues to be so for freight trains, but now it will also be so for passenger trains, because the train will depart from here in Querétaro to San Luis Potosí and Nuevo Laredo, on the border with the United States,” she declared.

The Mexico City-Querétaro train route will be 226 kilometers long and, he stated, will be ready in 2027.

Meanwhile, construction began this month on the Querétaro-Irapuato, Guanajuato train, which will reach León and Guadalajara.

“This month, construction began on the Querétaro-Irapuato train, which will reach León and Guadalajara. This important train is contributing to the recovery of passenger trains in our country. Passenger trains greatly contribute to connecting communities, (…) allowing for better communication with less environmental impact,” he stated.

In addition to the construction of the Mexico City-Querétaro train, he said, work will be done to improve Federal Highway 57.

“Today there was an accident on Highway 57, there were several problems. In addition, we obviously need to support this highway, which is so important for the country. Once the train is installed, we’ll be able to travel back and forth in much less time. This train will travel at 150 kilometers per hour, and we’ll be able to arrive in a short time. This project will be completed in 2027; we’ll be cutting the bar,” he said.

Regarding the roadworks the Federation is carrying out in the state, he announced that it will also support the construction of vehicular bridges in San Juan del Río.

25,000 homes under construction

Regarding housing, he reported that through Infonavit, construction has begun on 25,000 homes for workers whose income is equal to or less than two minimum wages.

Through the National Housing Commission (Conavi), the plan is to develop 7,000 homes for people who are not eligible.

Poverty Indicators

In her message, the president highlighted that in six years, 13.5 million Mexicans have escaped poverty, a condition affecting 29.6% of the population.

In this regard, she stated that the increase in the minimum wage, as well as the Welfare Programs, influenced the reduction in poverty.

“From 2018 to 2025, the minimum wage increased by 135% in real terms, inflation did not increase, and foreign direct investment (FDI) did not cease. In fact, this year—with all its difficulties due to the international situation—a record for FDI was broken in our country. That is why it is important to continue increasing the minimum wage, because even in the informal economy, when the minimum wage increases, the income of all families also increases,” she commented.

Currently, the minimum wage covers the cost of 1.7 basic food baskets, and his administration’s goal is for the minimum wage to cover the cost of 2.5 basic food baskets by 2030.

Almost half a million beneficiaries

Regarding the implementation of social programs, he commented that in Querétaro, 496,016 people receive direct government support, representing an investment of 11.888 billion pesos.

At the local level, 205,542 seniors receive the universal pension; in addition to 15,785 beneficiaries of the program for people with disabilities; 68,133 young adolescents in upper secondary education receive scholarships; 3,278 young people in higher education receive support; 42,372 elementary school students receive scholarships, primarily from indigenous communities, among other beneficiaries of federal programs.

During the president’s address, Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri González stated that he will continue working in coordination with the federal government for the benefit of the country and the state.
