Five executed in Zacatecas; bodies mutilated and scattered on highway

Four men and a woman were violently murdered, and their mutilated bodies were scattered along a stretch of highway connecting the municipality of Pinos, Zacatecas, with Ojuelos, Jalisco, in an incident that authorities attribute to a settling of scores between organized crime groups vying for control of that territory.

The events occurred this Sunday, September 14, in an area of the country near the junction of Zacatecas, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, and San Luis Potosí. For more than 15 years, a fierce dispute has raged between factions of the Gulf Cartel, the Taliban Cartel (formerly Zetas), the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, and the Sinaloa Cartel, the latter two being predominant in the area.

According to information shared by residents of the region on social media, there had been an unusual circulation of vehicles with armed men in the area since early Sunday morning. At dawn, farmers and their families passing by in their trucks witnessed the horrific scene of the five people murdered and scattered along the road.

It was reported that more than five hours passed before representatives of the State Preventive Police and the Zacatecas Attorney General’s Office arrived at the scene to begin conducting the respective forensic examinations, remove the bodies and human remains, and transport them to the Forensic Medical Service in the capital of Zacatecas.

As of Monday morning, September 16, no authority, neither the Zacatecas Attorney General’s Office nor the Ministry of Public Security, had issued any official report on the murder of the five people, nor their identities.

Nor did the Spokesperson’s Office for the Peacebuilding Roundtable, headed by Governor David Monreal Ávila, issue a position at the Government Palace, across from the Plaza de Armas, prior to the Mexican Independence Day parade.
