Mexico seeks to take the first step toward technological independence. Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration is promoting the development of four Earth observation satellites to monitor phenomena related to climate change and national security. These satellites will allow the country to generate its own information without relying on foreign sources.
Under the mission name Ixtli—which in Nahuatl means “eyes to see”—researchers, students, and academics from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN), the Ensenada Center for Scientific Research and Higher Education (CICESE), and the Popular Autonomous University of the State of Puebla (UPAEP) have been responsible for the design of the satellites since December 2024.
