With the arrival of the autumn equinox in September, the mandarin harvest officially began in Veracruz, and recent weather conditions point to a good season.

The rains of recent months have benefited citrus plantations in the state, predicting a rebound in production in key municipalities such as Álamo Temapache, Tuxpan, Tihuatlán, and Tamiahua.

Imelda Garrido Alvarado, president of the Special Commission for the Support of Citrus Production, emphasized that various projects are being promoted to improve production and support producers. These include strategies to optimize water use, certify disease-free nurseries, and strengthen infrastructure for post-production management.

The commission is also working on the creation of public policies that address the sector’s challenges, such as improving crop quality and increasing income for workers, day laborers, and primary producers.

Veracruz is one of the country’s leading citrus-producing states, with more than 171,000 hectares under cultivation, representing 48.5% of national production.
