It was a unique opportunity to support and congratulate a woman who fights for democracy, defends human rights, and had just won the Nobel Peace Prize. But when Claudia Sheinbaum was asked about the extraordinary recognition received by Venezuelan leader María Corina Machado, the Mexican president simply said: “No comment.” It was a missed opportunity to promote democracy in Latin America and a sad example of how an anti-democratic Mexico that openly defends dictatorships like those in Venezuela and Cuba continues to exist.
