Members of the Ministry of National Defense (Defense) and the National Guard (GN) located more than a ton of methamphetamine, fentanyl, and opium hidden in a shipment of chili peppers being transported aboard a tractor-trailer in Sonora.
The vehicle was driven by a 27-year-old man and departed from El Espinal, Sinaloa, bound for Mexicali, Baja California.
The operation took place around 2:30 p.m. on Friday, October 24, during inspection operations at the “Cucapah” Military Security Post, located in San Luis Río Colorado.
The tractor-trailer, identified as belonging to the company “Transportes Refrigerados del Norte,” was transporting boxes of jalapeño and serrano chili peppers. During the inspection, carried out using technological equipment, the shipment presented inconsistencies, so a manual inspection was performed.
As a result, the military located 235 packages containing five kilograms of methamphetamine each, two bags of fentanyl weighing two kilograms each, and five packages of opium gum weighing one kilogram each.
The total seizure amounted to 1,175 kilograms of methamphetamine, 4 kilos of fentanyl, and 5 kilos of opium gum.
Following the discovery, the military arrested the driver of the tractor-trailer, identified as a 27-year-old man from Mexicali, Baja California, who was placed in the custody of the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office, along with the trailer and the seized drugs.
Although the criminal organization that attempted to transport this shipment from Sinaloa is unknown, that state is the stronghold of the currently feuding factions of the Sinaloa Cartel: Los Mayos and Los Chapitos.
It is worth mentioning that factions of the Sinaloa Cartel also have a presence in the state of Baja California.
Recently, more than 500 kilograms and 130 liters of methamphetamine, as well as more than 200,000 fentanyl pills, were seized in the state of Sinaloa.
This operation was announced by Omar García Harfuch, head of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC), who explained that the seizure took place in the municipality of Culiacán, Sinaloa.
According to the Secretariat of National Defense, the following were seized in the operation:
550 kilograms and 130 liters of methamphetamine.
23 kilograms and 211,000 fentanyl pills.
3,400 liters and one ton of chemical precursors.
In addition, the destruction of 1,550 liters of chemical precursors and 275 kilograms of substances used to produce synthetic drugs was reported in Cosalá.
These actions occur within the framework of the deployment of federal security forces and the Armed Forces in the state in response to the wave of violence caused by the war between factions of the Sinaloa Cartel that began on September 9, 2024.
