Cold front number 16 brought heavy rains and flooding to the cities of Reynosa and Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, yesterday. Meanwhile, in Chihuahua, the polar air mass associated with the weather phenomenon caused temperatures between -2 and -7 degrees Celsius in towns in the mountainous region, Civil Protection authorities reported.
In Reynosa, the rainfall, which began shortly after 6:00 a.m., caused severe flooding on the streets, mainly on Monterrey Avenue, near the Maternal and Child Hospital in the Campestre neighborhood, leading to traffic difficulties and stranded vehicles.
There were also reports of downed trees and power lines, as well as homes and schools with water accumulation, such as Cetis 131, where classes were suspended.
In Nuevo Laredo, the rain caused dozens of vehicles to become trapped in floodwaters, and some elementary schools canceled classes as a precaution.
Humberto Fernández, director of local Civil Protection and Firefighters, explained that the heaviest rainfall began around 6:19 a.m., immediately triggering preventative operations.
Among the roads that remained flooded for approximately one hour and 45 minutes were Venezuela Avenue, Peru Avenue, and various sections of César López de Lara Avenue.
Municipal personnel removed trash, cans, and cardboard boxes that were obstructing the flow of storm drains, allowing the water to gradually recede.
The Tamaulipas Civil Protection Coordination specified that flooding also occurred in the municipalities of Río Bravo and Díaz Ordaz.
Authorities urged the public to avoid traveling through low-lying areas and to stay informed about the possibility of continued rain on Thursday in the northern border region of the state.
In Chihuahua, the temperature dropped to -7.4 degrees Celsius in the town of El Vergel, in the municipality of Balleza. In Temósachic, the temperature reached -4.5 degrees Celsius; in Creel, in the municipality of Bocoyna, -2.7 degrees Celsius; and in Ciudad Madera, -2.2 degrees Celsius, according to the State Civil Protection Coordination report.
The National Meteorological Service forecasts that this Thursday, cold front number 16 will extend over the Gulf of Mexico and the northern Yucatán Peninsula and interact with a low-pressure trough extending across eastern and southeastern Mexico, causing heavy to very heavy rainfall in those regions. Intense isolated showers are forecast for areas of Hidalgo, Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca.
