After truckers and farmers reported that another round of negotiations with the federal government had failed, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo affirmed that her administration will continue the dialogue, but warned that authorities can only commit to what they can truly deliver.
“When there are legitimate demands, they are addressed, but you can’t promise what you can’t deliver,” she stated.
The Mayor explained that the government is seeking solutions within the available budget, and therefore will not enter into unrealistic agreements.
“There is a negotiating table, and we are looking for a solution, obviously, one that is within the framework of available resources. We are accustomed to making commitments, not promises. When we commit to something, we have to fulfill it; we have to be very responsible about what is possible and what is not.”
Regarding the corn price crisis, Sheinbaum recalled that a tripartite agreement was reached to support producers, with the participation of purchasing companies, state governments, and the federal government.
She indicated that the goal is to differentiate the price between Mexican white corn and yellow corn from the United States, whose international price has fallen drastically.
“We sought a tripartite solution… that the companies that buy corn would offer a higher price, that the state governments would contribute, and that the federal government would contribute. An agreement was reached.”
The President stated that next year one trillion pesos will be allocated to welfare programs, in addition to resources for health, education, and social infrastructure. Therefore, she indicated that it is necessary to prioritize legitimate demands and avoid political pressure.
“When there is a demand of this type, we look for a way to find a solution… when it is not related to a political issue intended to create a problem, just for the sake of creating one.”
Regarding the road blockades, Sheinbaum questioned the necessity of these actions while dialogue remains open.
“Blocking a highway… that’s where I ask, what motivates them to block a highway if they’re at a negotiating table seeking alternatives?”
Sheinbaum reiterated her willingness to negotiate, but insisted that the solutions must be realistic: primarily supporting small producers and guaranteeing security without yielding to political pressure or unfeasible demands.
