Heavy rains collapse bridge, leaving several communities isolated in Veracruz

Several communities located between Zontecomatlán and Ilamatlán were once again cut off after last night’s rains washed away a temporary bridge installed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Public Works (SIOP) following the October 10 floods.

According to the National Water Commission (Conagua), the rainfall recorded last night exceeded 160 liters per square meter in 24 hours and nearly caused the Cazones River to overflow again, the same river that caused a disaster in the northern part of the state on October 10.

Fear gripped the residents of Poza Rica again after last night’s downpour, which had left them submerged in water and mud on October 10. The flooding forced the Poza Rica city council, headed by Fernando Luis Remes Garza of the Morena party, to open a shelter due to the rising waters of the Cazones River.

Residents of Xoxocapa, Tlatlazoquico, San Gregorio, Santa Cruz, Toltepec, Huitztipan, and the municipal seat of Ilamatlán confirmed to Latinus that heavy rains last night caused the Calabozo River to overflow and wash away the only bridge connecting these communities.

They explained that it was “a temporary crossing installed by the Ministry of Communications using metal pipes and a gravel and sand fill, but it was destroyed by last night’s rains.”
