Tour operators in Tulum have lamented the lack of a full recovery in the arrival of American tourists, as they are the biggest spenders. Currently, the destination is receiving mostly Italian, French, and Canadian visitors.
Rafael Alvarado García, a crafts vendor, noted that American tourism “is still not at 100%.” He indicated that the absence of these tourists directly impacts sales. “They tend to spend more money,” he pointed out, since this market “used to purchase more products and services than other markets,” according to La Jornada.
Lorena Bass, a tour operator, mentioned that while the tourists who do arrive are spending money, their expenditure is much lower than in previous years. “It’s very little compared to past seasons,” she stated.
Similarly, Adrián Domínguez, who manages a motorcycle and bicycle rental company, stated that there has been a slight increase, estimated at between 30% and 40%, “but still insufficient to speak of a solid recovery.” He added that expectations aren’t high for the recovery of American tourists because they aren’t traveling as much, and this has slowed the local recovery.
Jesús Almaguer, former president of the Cancun, Puerto Morelos, and Isla Mujeres Hotel Association (AHCPMIM), recently criticized Tulum residents for making damaging comments about the destination on social media, arguing that they promote a denigrating image. “That’s how we make a living, from tourism, and while there are things to improve, it’s being blown out of proportion,” he said at the time.
