The Playa del Carmen City Council commemorated National Mayan Culture Day with a civic ceremony held at the Old City Hall, highlighting the enduring legacy of Mayan culture and giving special recognition to the contributions of Indigenous women.
During the ceremony, Idania Gamboa Medina, Director General of the Playa del Carmen Women’s Institute, noted that Mayan culture remains alive in language, worldview, and community life, and emphasized the role of women as guardians of identity and ancestral wisdom.
Within the framework of the Year of Indigenous Women, the commitment of the municipal government, led by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, to the preservation of Mayan culture was emphasized, as well as its commitment to promoting the rights of Indigenous women, their access to education and health, and a life free from violence.
Representing the mayor, Chief Administrative Officer Guillermo Brahms acknowledged the strength and contributions of the Mayan people to the development of the municipality. Prior to the civic ceremony, a traditional Mayan ceremony was held, led by Father Román Pat.
Municipal authorities and representatives from various departments attended the commemoration, with which the City Council reiterated its commitment to strengthening the cultural legacy of the Mayan people in Playa del Carmen.
