The overflowing of waterways due to the intense rains in the Los Tuxtlas region of Veracruz caused significant damage in the community of La Palma, in the municipality of Catemaco.
During the early morning hours, the river level began to rise, carrying mud towards some houses in the town, generating concern and fear among the residents, who requested assistance from the authorities.
Access to the community was also affected, as branches and trees were left blocking the roads, which were cleared during the morning of December 22nd.
In this regard, some residents accused the authorities of neglecting dredging the waterways, which they believe caused the overflowing, and they hope the issue will be addressed.
“The rains are still here, and there are many people in the streets because of what happened with the rivers in La Palma, where the water swept away a car,” a person stated in a video that circulated on social media.
The State Government assured that the emergency is already being addressed and that Civil Protection personnel, along with members of the National Defense Secretariat, have arrived at the scene as part of Plan DN-III.
For its part, the Municipal Government indicated that a census will be conducted shortly to count the affected individuals and provide support to those affected.
“The mayor, Juan José Rosario Morales, visited the area to assess the damage and monitor the actions implemented, in coordination with the State Police, National Guard, Mexican Army, the Welfare Group, and State Civil Protection,” they stated.
Meanwhile, the Civil Protection Secretariat has called on the general public to remain alert to emergency warnings related to the storm and hurricane season.
However, they emphasized the importance of avoiding alarmism and verifying information at all times to rule out false reports.
“With the rainy season approaching, stay alert and well-informed. Avoid alarmism, verify information, and consult only official sources. An informed community is a protected community,” the agency stated.
