Durango will advance in highway recovery with a new federal scheme

Governor Esteban Villegas Villarreal announced that Durango will make significant progress in the rehabilitation of its highways through a new working model with the Federal Government that will allow for faster and more efficient maintenance of federal, state, and rural roads. He explained that this effort stems from agreements with municipal presidents, with the goal of prioritizing the sections with the greatest impact on mobility and development in the state.

Villegas Villarreal noted that the Federal Government acknowledged the deterioration of many of the country’s highways and that, to avoid high costs and delays, it decided to address them through direct administration. Under this model, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation purchases the machinery, supplies the materials, and directly manages the work, allowing for faster progress at a lower cost.

The governor explained that Durango is expected to receive two types of machinery: one for state highways and another for rural roads with a thinner surface. He explained that the federal program will not be sufficient to cover the entire state, so the State Government and municipalities will work together, addressing secondary sections and defining priorities.

During President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s morning press conference, the Secretary of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation, Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina, announced that the National Highway Conservation Program and the 2026 Mega Pothole Repair Campaign include a historic investment to improve thousands of kilometers of the toll-free federal highway network, with Durango considered one of the priority regions.

Finally, Governor Esteban Villegas reiterated that progress will be made this year on strategic highways and confirmed the start of work on the Canatlán–Nuevo Ideal highway, in addition to projects in all 39 municipalities of the state. He stated that the goal is to improve traffic conditions, strengthen regional connectivity, and offer greater safety to Durango families.
