Sargassum increases on Cancun beaches due to cold fronts

The arrival of seven tons of sargassum seaweed on Cancún’s beaches is not an unusual phenomenon, but rather a result of current weather conditions. These flows of macroalgae will continue until February due to the cold fronts.

The Director of Public Services in Benito Juárez, Antonio de la Torre Chambé, indicated that, despite the increase in places like Playa del Niño, the situation remains within expected levels. It is only considered “atypical” when it exceeds 20 tons per day.

With the sargassum season beginning in April, the city council is implementing a logistical plan in collaboration with the Mexican Navy. This includes cleanup and training for hotel owners, ensuring proper waste management.
