Early this morning, a fire broke out at the main door of the Puebla Cathedral, an act that the Archdiocese attributed to two people who jumped over the fence to enter the atrium.
According to the Archdiocese of Puebla, the incident occurred at approximately 2:00 a.m. this Saturday.
“Apparently, at around 2:00 a.m., two individuals entered the Cathedral’s atrium, jumping over the fence on the Zócalo side, and then approached the door on that side and started a fire,” the Archdiocese stated.
Despite the seriousness of the act, authorities reported that no one was injured during the incident, but the Church condemned the material damage, emphasizing that the cathedral has been designated a spiritual, historical, and cultural heritage site of humanity.
“The Archdiocese of Puebla deeply regrets the acts of vandalism that occurred in the early morning. Civil Protection, Fire Department, and Police units responded to the scene and entered the atrium to extinguish the fire. At this time, no arrests have been made,” the statement read.
“Each of the cathedral’s doors is a symbol of unity, and being so dear to the people of Puebla, they deserve consideration, respect, and care,” the religious institution stated while publishing images of the damage left after the attack.
Personnel from the General Coordination of Civil Protection and Disaster Risk Management, the State Fire Department, Municipal Civil Protection, and the Police responded to the scene.
The Angelopolitan Church expressed its gratitude to the state authorities for their swift response in extinguishing the fire and preventing its spread.
Specialized personnel are currently conducting investigations to determine the exact cause and full extent of the damage.
To date, authorities have confirmed that no arrests have been made in connection with these acts of vandalism.
However, the Attorney General’s Office and other relevant agencies are continuing their investigation to identify those responsible for this damage to Puebla’s cultural heritage.
