US President Donald Trump held a “very productive” phone conversation Thursday with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum regarding border issues and drug trafficking.
Trump asserted that “Mexico has a wonderful and very smart leader. They should be very happy about that!” the president said in a message on his Truth Social network, adding that they would speak again soon.
The president considered this dialogue very positive for both nations.
“We will talk again soon and definitely arrange meetings in our respective countries,” Trump guaranteed.
This is the second conversation in the last month, following the US president’s threat to attack drug cartels in Mexico and amid the start of the review of the trade agreement between the two nations and Canada (USMCA).
The Mexican president described the conversation today as “productive and cordial,” saying that during the dialogue, both governments agreed to maintain open communication channels and that “both teams will continue working together.”
On the trade front, she stated that although they discussed the USMCA, “nothing is concrete yet, but we are making very good progress.”
The call coincides with the visit of Mexican Economy Secretary Marcelo Ebrard to Washington, where he met with his counterpart, Howard Lutnick, to advance bilateral trade issues.
In their call on January 12, the president affirmed that a military intervention in Mexico was “ruled out” following the capture and arrest of deposed Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro on December 3.
