The Government of the State of Yucatán reported that the modernization of the lower roads of the City Center vehicular overpass registers a sustained progress and is already in its final stage, consolidating itself as one of the most relevant road infrastructure works for urban mobility in Mérida.
The project formally began with the flag-waving led by Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena in August and was designed to meet the intense vehicular flow that is concentrated in this strategic area, where up to 8 thousand vehicles from different parts of the Yucatecan capital circulate during peak hours.
The work includes an investment of more than 74 million pesos, in addition to comprehensive urban modernization actions, including the relocation of bus stops, demolition of speed bumps, construction of retaining walls with ready-mix concrete, and installation of underground power lines.
It also includes paving and repaving works, horizontal and vertical signage, garrisons, sidewalks, rainwater wells, modernization of the lighting system, traffic lights, traffic light cameras, and urban landscaping works.
Day and night shifts to reduce damage
From the beginning of the work, the authorities agreed to carry out the work in day and night shifts to speed up its progress and reduce effects on traffic, a strategy that allowed to maintain the pace as scheduled in one of the points with the highest traffic in the city.
The head of the Secretariat of Infrastructure for Welfare, Alaine López Briceño, reiterated that the main objective is to deliver a functional and safe infrastructure in the shortest possible time, prioritizing mobility and citizen well-being at the City Center roundabout.
In this process, he highlighted the coordinated work with the Ministry of Public Security (SSP), which made it possible to analyze critical points, implement road operations, and make timely adjustments to traffic at times of high demand.
As a result of these actions, the authorities reported a 35% reduction in vehicular flow, evidencing a significant improvement in urban mobility and a decrease in congestion registered in this strategic area of Mérida.
In the same sense, the general director of the Institute of Highway Infrastructure of Yucatan (Incay), Ángel Pérez Medrano, pointed out that the modernization of the overpass will increase the operational capacity of the road, especially during the hours with greater vehicular demand.
In addition, he stressed that these actions will strengthen the safety and efficiency of traffic, by having updated infrastructure, better lighting, modern signage and control systems that order the flow of vehicles in this key area.
The state government reported that Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena will deliver in the coming weeks the modernization of this road area, which so far has received a favorable response from the users who circulate daily through this central point of the city.
