The announcement was made during the Morena senators’ plenary session held at the historic Xicoténcatl mansion in Mexico City. López has faced public scrutiny in recent months regarding issues related to the cartel known as La Barredora and other matters within the Senate.

The Morena senator explained that he made the decision to step aside from his legislative duties to focus on grassroots organizing in preparation for the 2027 midterm elections.

“The opportunity arose to dedicate myself to political and electoral work leading up to 2027. Today, I am called upon to do something that requires my full attention: strengthening unity within the movement, within the party. This is something I am familiar with. I have always been known for my grassroots work, and the most important thing is to strengthen the party, the movement, heading into 2027. And now I have asked my colleagues to accept my withdrawal from the parliamentary group,” he commented, accompanied by Ignacio Mier.

López denied that he is seeking an ambassadorship or that he will request a leave of absence from his position as senator. “I am just another soldier of the Fourth Transformation,” he declared.

Adán Augusto López assumed the presidency of the Political Coordination Board in the Senate of the Republic on September 1, 2024. As coordinator of the Morena party’s Senate caucus, he was appointed to preside over this governing body during the LXVI Legislature, controlling the Senate’s legislative agenda and budget.
