What’s the difference between snow and sleet? They are expected in the mountains of Chihuahua and Durango.

The mountains of Chihuahua and Durango could be blanketed in white this Saturday night due to conditions favorable for snow and/or sleet.

The National Meteorological Service indicates that a cyclonic circulation in the mid-levels of the atmosphere northwest of the country, along with an upper-level trough and the subtropical jet stream, could produce this scenario.

These weather systems will also bring wind gusts of 30 to 50 km/h, rain, and showers to states in northwestern and northern Mexico.

The forecast for minimum temperatures indicates the possibility of frost in 16 states across the country.

Minimum temperatures of -5 to 0 °C with frost: mountainous areas of Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Durango, Coahuila, Nuevo León, San Luis Potosí, Zacatecas, Michoacán, Guanajuato, State of Mexico, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala, Puebla, Veracruz, and Oaxaca.

Minimum temperatures of 0 to 5 °C: mountainous areas of Tamaulipas, Aguascalientes, Jalisco, Querétaro, Mexico City, Morelos, and Chiapas.

In contrast, the forecast for maximum temperatures today marks a huge difference in the middle of winter, as the thermometer could climb to 35 and even 40 degrees in some areas of Mexico.

Maximum temperatures of 35 to 40 °C: Sinaloa, Guerrero, Puebla (southwest), and Oaxaca (coast and isthmus).

Maximum temperatures of 30 to 35 °C: Baja California Sur, Sonora, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, western Durango, southern Morelos, and coastal Chiapas.

And although an anticyclonic circulation in the mid-levels of the atmosphere will bring stable weather and a gradual increase in daytime temperatures across most of Mexico, cold to very cold temperatures will prevail in mountainous areas of the Northern Plateau and Central Plateau during the night and morning hours. Another phenomenon that, although infrequent, could bring rain is a low-pressure trough and the influx of humid air from the Pacific Ocean.

Rain forecast for today, February 7, 2026:
Showers (5 to 25 mm): Chihuahua, Durango, Sinaloa, Zacatecas, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, and Guerrero.
Isolated rain (0.1 to 5 mm): Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sonora, Coahuila, State of Mexico, Oaxaca, and Chiapas.

Snow consists of ice crystal flakes that fall in consistently cold temperatures, forming at temperatures below 0 degrees Celsius. It is light and fluffy. The main difference between snow and sleet is its structure and temperature.

Sleet occurs when snowflakes only partially melt as they pass through a surface layer of warm air. It is a mixture of water and partially melted snow (ice pellets) that freezes as it passes through layers of cold air, resulting in a denser and more slippery substance.
