In an interview, the business leader explained that several closures were already planned, as some businesses were simply waiting to finish the year to meet contractual obligations. She indicated that December, traditionally the month with the highest sales, was key to trying to cover rent, payroll, and debts, although she acknowledged that the income wasn’t enough for all establishments, which led to the permanent closure of some restaurants.
Porras Zubiria emphasized that there are currently no reports of new openings, as the sector is maintaining a conservative stance. “It’s a time to be cautious, to assess whether growth and the opening of new branches are possible, as that’s what’s most stalled,” she stated. She added that the lack of accumulated profits limits the possibility of investing in renovations, expansions, or new locations.
The president of Canirac acknowledged that, while tourism has generated new jobs nationwide, the impact in Durango has been less significant. He specified that restaurants affiliated with the chamber have seen an approximate 5 percent reduction in their workforce, though he emphasized that the main objective is to preserve existing jobs and prevent further job losses.
He also noted that staff turnover has decreased, reflecting a tighter job market. As an example, he pointed out that recently up to 30 people applied for a single vacancy, demonstrating the economic pressure and the need for employment in the region.
Porras Zubiria also reported that some restaurants have begun training courses, primarily to offer menus in English. Regarding inclusion, he affirmed that the establishments comply with physical accessibility regulations, although he acknowledged that implementing Braille menus remains a challenge. Therefore, they have opted to train staff to provide appropriate service to people with visual impairments.
