Gómez Palacio Government to Coordinate Security Strategy with OXXO Following Reports of Robberies
The mayor of Gómez Palacio, Betzabé Martínez Arango, announced that her administration will work with the OXXO convenience store chain to strengthen security strategies at its stores, following recent reports of robberies in the municipality.
During the “Mondays with the Mayor” press conference, the mayor emphasized that the City Council maintains an institutional relationship with the business sector to strengthen crime prevention.
Mayor Martínez stated that she has established institutional communication with all chambers of commerce and that she recently held a breakfast meeting with representatives from the National Chamber of the Transformation Industry (Canacintra) and the Business Coordinating Council (CCE).
“Let’s remember that businesses are now organized into different groups, but they are also important to us. We have direct communication with them, and we have already been reaching out to representatives from OXXO stores to jointly strengthen the security strategy because that is how we can improve and reduce crime rates,” the mayor said.
The mayor highlighted that thanks to the police’s preventative work, there were no robberies of downtown businesses in December, and that they will work together to strengthen security strategies for Oxxo stores.
The National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) of this city, during its meeting with security authorities from all three levels of government, including the Deputy Attorney General’s Office for the region, reported that robberies at Oxxo convenience stores in Gómez Palacio have increased by up to 100 percent.
Arsenio Alvarado Luján, president of Canaco, commented that while they have a WhatsApp group with security authorities, it is necessary to express their needs to them personally and to hear their recommendations.
The merchants’ representative reported that among the concerns expressed at this meeting were the robberies at Oxxo stores in the city, which have skyrocketed from two or three per week to as many as six.
“Right now we have the issue of robberies at Oxxo stores… yes, we are receiving support from the police, but we do need to develop strategies to see what other measures we can take to make it less easy for people to rob them,” said Alvarado.
Filing complaints was another topic addressed, because while complaints have been filed when victims of crime have been identified, the ratification process has become another issue.
In fact, they considered it a risk for citizens to have to go back to the Deputy Attorney General’s Office to ratify a complaint, so they requested that the relevant authorities waive this requirement.
Council members from different political parties, such as Yahir Vitela, Francisco Bueno, and Carlos Vargas, also attended this meeting and pledged to bring forward their proposals, including one for this business organization to have representation on the Citizen Council for Public Safety, recently approved by the City Council.
