Authorities are seeking to have Dolores Hidalgo declared the third World Heritage City in Guanajuato, joining San Miguel de Allende and the state capital.
The goal is for Guanajuato to become the most important tourist destination in central Mexico, especially considering that Dolores Hidalgo is the Cradle of Mexican Independence.
Adrián Hernández, mayor of Dolores Hidalgo, emphasized that the process is lengthy, but he will submit the application to UNESCO.
“It’s not a simple matter, because we need to have a common denominator that allows us to become a World Heritage City,” he explained.
The mayor indicated that several firms specializing in this type of project have been consulted, and the guidance of the state government will be essential.
