Ajijic: Jalisco’s Magic Town Becoming the “Toronto of the South”

Each year, thousands of Canadians swap maple for tequila and choose Ribera de Chapala as their new home, drawn to Mexico’s largest lake, its temperate climate, and a cross-border community life.

According to municipal authorities, between 30 and 40% of the foreign population living in Chapala is Canadian, while the remaining majority is from the United States. Connectivity with Guadalajara, tourist infrastructure, and quality of life have positioned Ajijic as one of the destinations with the largest presence of foreigners outside Canada and the American population outside their country.

Heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Chapala and Ajijic line up as strategic points of international hospitality. The proximity to Guadalajara Airport, modernization, roads, and public investment reinforce its global projection as one of Jalisco’s key destinations to receive the world.
