“Allies” in Zacatecas and SLP challenge Sheinbaum

Saúl Monreal, a legislator from the Morena party, and Manuel Velasco, coordinator of the Green Party (PVEM) parliamentary group in the Senate, ignored Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum’s calls to combat nepotism in the 2027 elections.

After an interview with the media, Velasco endorsed his colleague Ruth González, wife of the governor of San Luis Potosí, Ricardo Gallardo, for the governorship of that state.

“Here’s the one who’s leading in the polls!” he exclaimed, raising the hand of the senator from San Luis Potosí.

This comes despite Sheinbaum’s calls for the current administration (4T) to avoid nominating family members to inherit political positions in 2027.

In response, the Green Party legislator smiled and said, “Oh, Manuelito,” while hugging her coordinator.

“Are you seriously considering running for governor?”

“She hasn’t decided yet,” Velasco said. “I still don’t know, really,” González stated.

However, the parliamentary leader insisted: “But in the polls we’ve conducted, she’s two to one ahead, with a wide margin of more than 20 points. I hope she decides to run.”

—Will she be the next governor?

“Yes, without a doubt, let’s hope she wants to,” and Velasco left the Plenary Hall to attend a private meeting.

In the Plenary, the legislator was told, “They’ve already announced her candidacy for senator!” to which the environmentalist senator responded:

“They have to convince me,” said Senator Velasco. “Many things can be said; a senator must decide in due course.”

She indicated that for the moment her work is focused on the Senate; the important thing right now is to work, the important thing is that the people of San Luis Potosí and all of Mexico expect her to be doing what is expected of her here in the Senate.

She also commented that her colleague Velasco “can say many things, but he says, ‘They have to convince me.’”

— What will it take to convince you?

“I don’t think this is the time to talk about candidacies.”

When asked if the issue of nepotism was prompting reflection, the senator commented, “Of course it is. We’ve been discussing it, reaching a consensus with party leaders, the governor of San Luis Potosí, and of course we have great respect for the President.

A few months ago in San Luis Potosí, a law was promoted stipulating that the next person in the governorship should be a woman. It was implied that this was precisely so that the governor’s wife could assume the position. After pressure, this law was withdrawn.

Since last year, the President has repeatedly called for an end to the candidacies of family members in 2027.

“What a candidate seeks is the popular vote, so if a cousin, brother, wife, son, or brother-in-law runs, I don’t think they’ll do very well in the state, in the mayoral race, or in the state legislature.” “Let’s hope that at least the party I come from doesn’t appoint any family members to any position; I believe that’s also in Morena’s bylaws. And whoever does it in 2027 is going to look very bad, right?” he emphasized in one of his morning press conferences.

Ruth González, esposa de Ricardo Gallardo, gobernador de SLP, fue destapada por Manuel Velazco para la candidatura en la entidad.
