According to Erick’s family, “Cabo” died Thursday morning after neighbors alerted them to the condition of the medium-sized, brown dog near Venustiano Carranza.
“I ran to grab him… As much as we wanted to rescue him, we couldn’t.”
According to Erick’s family, “Cabo” experienced health problems similar to “an attack,” so they immediately tried to help him, but unfortunately, they couldn’t save his life. They don’t know how he could have been poisoned, as they say he was fine and never showed any signs of illness.
“We can’t explain what kind of poison it was.”
They also indicated that “Cabo” was a beloved dog in the community and an important member of the family, having come to live with Erick Omar at three months old. He was always by his side.
(Cabo) He was very playful, he had a habit of jumping on him and kind of nipping at his hand (Erick Omar’s). He would kind of push our hand so we would pick him up, pet him, and he would kind of nip at our hand.
Cabo the dog is remembered for the love and loyalty he always showed Erick Omar. The little animal tried to defend him when he was attacked by police officers and also led his funeral procession when he was buried in a cemetery in Mexico City. Cabo’s behavior changed after his owner’s death.
Then sometimes he would just sleep, or, honestly, he would see a patrol car and bark and bark. His behavior changed a lot, just like all of ours (the family).
The family indicated that Cabo will be cremated and his remains will be placed next to Erick’s.
In November 2025, the case of Erick Omar shocked all of Mexico City. Because the young shopkeeper was out walking his dog, “Cabo,” in the streets of the city center, he was intercepted by police officers.
A video captured by local residents shows the exact moment the young man is repeatedly beaten by the officers.
In fact, “Cabo” can be seen trying to approach Erick, but a police officer notices and chases him away. When an officer drags Erick Omar to put him in a patrol car with license plate MX-428D-4, Erick runs after him.
Later, Erick Omar’s body was found lifeless with various injuries. Following these events, the Secretariat of Citizen Security (SSC) reported the arrest of at least six police officers, who are being investigated for their involvement.
However, the family claims they have encountered many obstacles in the legal process and are only seeking justice for the death of Erick, who left behind two young children.
I swear to God we don’t want money, nor do we want to go viral on social media or anything like that. All we want is justice. We know we’re not bringing my nephew back, but at least another death won’t go unpunished.
