The municipality of Querétaro has carried out more than 14 thousand sterilizations in the current administration and will launch itinerant fairs every 15 days. In addition, it keeps 50 animals for adoption and attends to seven daily reports of abuse
The municipal president of Querétaro, Felipe Fernando Macías Olvera, reported that his administration will strengthen preventive policies in animal welfare, with emphasis on permanent free sterilization, adoption, and the fight against abuse.
“The municipality of Querétaro was the first to make it visible and put it at the highest level of hierarchy in the municipality’s organizational chart, creating the Secretariat of Animal Welfare,” he said.
In this sense, he announced that during 2026, itinerant animal welfare fairs will be held every 15 days, bringing veterinary services closer to different delegations.
Free, permanent sterilization
The Secretary of Animal Welfare, Lennyz Meléndez, explained that the municipality operates the only free permanent sterilization program in the country.
“We have the only free permanent sterilization program in the entire country. This speaks of the great effort that is being made to prevent abuse and abandonment,” he said.
So far in the administration, more than 14 thousand sterilizations have been carried out, a figure that they described as historic. In addition, almost 6 thousand identification microchips have been placed, and anti-rabies vaccination is maintained with municipal resources.
Adoption: 50 animals are waiting for a home
Currently, around 50 dogs and cats are in the adoption program in the municipal centers.
“Each adoption represents saving lives,” said the secretary, who explained that some animals have been waiting for a family for more than a year, so every weekend they are taken to squares and fairs to promote responsible adoption.
Combating abuse
Meléndez reported that the municipality receives seven reports of animal abuse daily, which are attended to in less than 24 hours.
“The culture of reporting is permeating a lot,” he said.
In addition, he highlighted the coordination with the State Attorney General’s Office to prosecute serious cases.
For his part, the mayor stressed that the objective is to consolidate humanist public policies:
“What we are looking for are more humanist public policies.”
