A green lung with history in the heart of Morelia

In the heart of Morelia’s Historic Center lies a place small in size but enormous in history and tradition: the Jardín de la Soterraña (Garden of the Underground). A corner that, at first glance, seems like just a green space nestled among cobblestone streets, but holds a legend passed down through generations.

Its name comes from an old story. It is said that the image of the Virgin venerated in the area was buried to protect it during times of conflict. “Soterraña” means underground, and those who sought it had to traverse dark alleyways to find it, giving rise to a tale that blends faith, mystery, and tradition.

Over time, this garden became a meeting point for neighbors and merchants. Here, neighborhood life unfolded amidst conversations, laughter, and everyday activities. However, it also experienced periods of neglect, when its paths fell into disrepair and its history seemed to fade away.

Today, the space has been restored. Its trees offer shade, the benches invite relaxation, and the central fountain provides a constant murmur. For some visitors, this garden is simply a place to disconnect.

“I come to relax, just to hang out. Why here and not in another plaza? Because it’s quieter here. I honestly didn’t know its history. I’m from Michoacán, about 20 kilometers away, and sometimes I come when I pass by the market near the auditorium, buy a few things, and take them with me. I come every now and then, just to spend a little time,” commented one visitor.

For others, the place represents memories of their youth and the changes the city has undergone.

“When I was very young, I worked for the city bus service here in Morelia. When I got off work, I would come to the Soterraña baths to shower,” recalled Vicente González.

He also noted that there used to be more small trees, which were removed during a recent renovation.

“The little trees gave us oxygen. It’s peaceful to come here on the weekend, but perhaps it needs more activity, something like a small market where you can find food or a coffee shop year-round.”

The Jardín de la Soterraña is now a green oasis amidst the hustle and bustle of the city center. A space that invites you to stop, listen, and remember that Morelia’s history is also being built in its small corners.
