At least two foreign tourists drowned in separate incidents on beaches in the tourist destination of Puerto Escondido, in the coastal region of Oaxaca.

The first incident occurred at Punta Zicatela beach, where a British tourist was swept away by strong waves.

Security agencies identified the victim as 32-year-old Lio James. According to initial reports, the tourist—who was vacationing with a group of friends—entered the water and was pulled under by a rip current.

The young man was brought ashore; however, when first aid was administered, he showed no vital signs.

His companions notified the British Embassy in Mexico and also informed the young man’s family of his death.

Meanwhile, the other incident occurred at Playa Coral, where an elderly foreign woman went snorkeling.

Witnesses reported that the woman was not moving and did not surface for air, so they approached and realized she no longer had vital signs.

In both incidents, personnel from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) went to the scene to carry out the corresponding procedures.

On February 7, it was reported that a 17-year-old boy drowned in the lake at La Encantada Park, next to Preparatory School Number 4, in the city of Zacatecas.

The young man, identified as Diego, a student at the school, accepted a challenge to dive into the lake. After entering the water, he did not resurface.

His classmates alerted the authorities and then fled the scene; only one remained with the victim’s clothes and recounted what happened to the rescuers, according to Luis Felipe Santos Quintanilla, coordinator of the Zacatecas Municipal Civil Protection agency.

A team of specialized divers, brought in from the municipality of Fresnillo, located Diego’s body.

During the rescue operation, Preparatory School Number 4 closed its doors and asked parents to pick up their children.
