The mayor of Uruapan, Grecia Quiroz García, denounced a coordinated strategy between the Michoacán state government and local legislators to remove her from office.
In a forceful statement, the mayor asserted that the attempt to initiate impeachment proceedings against her aims to silence her criticisms and halt the independent project she leads.
Quiroz García directly linked these institutional pressures to the assassination of her husband and predecessor, Carlos Manzo, which occurred in November 2015. The mayor was emphatic in stating that powerful groups are now seeking her “political death” after failing to stop the advance of the “Hat Movement.”
“Silence for Carlos wasn’t enough for them; now they want to do it to me. Today they want to impeach me and silence my voice because we have not yielded,” the mayor declared. Accusations and Resistance
The mayor maintains that the accusations against her are a “smokescreen” to prevent a deeper investigation into the masterminds behind Manzo’s murder, whom she has previously identified as figures linked to the state government. She also accused the legislative pressure of being a response to her refusal to allow political groups to regain control of Uruapan for extortion purposes.
The relationship between the Uruapan City Council and the State Government has fractured following Quiroz’s denunciations of abuses committed by federal and state forces in the municipality. Despite the threat of removal from office, Grecia Quiroz reaffirmed that she will not abandon her post and that she will defend municipal autonomy against what she calls a “state dictatorship.”
