Yucatán reports two confirmed cases of measles on Friday the 13th of Carnival

Unlike in 2025, measles cases are on the rise in Yucatán. On Friday, February 13, the Mexican Ministry of Health (SSA) reported two new confirmed cases and one probable case in the state, which is celebrating Carnival this weekend in several cities, including Mérida and Progreso.

So far in 2026, Yucatán has accumulated five confirmed cases of measles, detected in just 22 days (from January 23 to February 13), and 34 probable cases—that is, people with symptoms of the disease who have sought medical attention.

The state of Yucatán ended 2025 with only two confirmed cases of measles and 67 probable cases, so in just a month and a half, the number of confirmed cases has already doubled.

This year, the SSA reported the first case of measles in Yucatán on January 23; the second, on Monday, February 2; The third case was reported on Tuesday the 10th, and the fourth and fifth on Friday the 13th.

The patients reside in the municipalities of Izamal, Kanasín, and Mérida, according to the map published today by the Ministry of Health (SSA).

The outbreak is more severe in neighboring Quintana Roo, which in the last 24 hours also registered two new confirmed cases and 17 probable cases, bringing its total to 17 confirmed cases and 90 suspected cases so far in 2016.

Quintana Roo reported its first two confirmed cases of measles in 2016—both in Cancún—on Monday, February 2nd. Three cases were reported in Playa del Carmen on Wednesday the 4th, one on Thursday the 5th, one on Friday the 6th, one on Monday the 9th, two in Isla Mujeres on Tuesday the 10th, five yesterday, Thursday the 12th, and two today, Friday the 13th.

Meanwhile, Campeche remains without any confirmed cases of measles, but probable cases increased from four to seven between yesterday and today, Friday.

However, Campeche ended 2025 with 14 confirmed cases of measles in Hopelchén and Campeche, as well as 99 probable cases.

As of yesterday, Thursday, February 12th, Quintana Roo surpassed Campeche as the state with the highest number of measles cases on the Yucatán Peninsula.
