Morena, the ruling party, is at war with itself. And one of the most significant examples of this internal conflict is President Claudia Sheinbaum’s crusade to make Adán Augusto López a paragon of discipline.
Morena, the ruling party, is at war with itself: Julio Scherer against Jesús Ramírez Cuevas; Mario Delgado against Marx Arriaga; Pablo Gómez against Manuel Velasco; Rafael Marín Mollinedo against Mara Lezama; Saúl Monreal against Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar; Adán Augusto López against the entire world. The pragmatists against the purists. The Fourth Transformation movement is imploding.
One of the most significant examples of this internal conflict is President Claudia Sheinbaum’s crusade to make Adán Augusto López a paragon of discipline. The former Secretary of the Interior, a close associate of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, forged an electoral alliance with “Andy” López Beltrán and is promoting a mobilization agenda without authorization from the National Palace. Against the wishes of Mayor Sheinbaum, Adán Augusto López insists on placing Andrea Chávez as the candidate for governor of Chihuahua. The federal government’s response was swift.
Last week, a financial operator for the Morena senator was arrested in Tabasco. The arrest went largely unnoticed in the media, but was confirmed to Código Magenta by a former associate of a network of companies linked to Adán Augusto López. The arrest casts doubt on the constellation of shell companies that benefited from public contracts in the Senate through the direct intervention of Jorge Alberto Medina González, Adán Augusto López’s right-hand man and former Director General of Material Resources for the upper house. In Tabasco, the arrest was interpreted as a message.
Days later, N+ Televisa published a report revealing how at least 10 million pesos were diverted from the Baja California Sur Housing Institute to finance Adán Augusto López’s 2023 presidential pre-campaign. It is no coincidence that the state governor, Victor Castro Cosío, is identified as one of the beneficiaries of the illegal campaign financing scheme operated by businessman Sergio Carmona in 2021. Governors who came to power with money from tax evasion schemes ended up as key allies of Adán Augusto López in the internal race for the Morena party’s presidential nomination.
Sergio Carmona’s case is of interest to the United States justice system. Julio Carmona, Sergio’s brother and former General Administrator of the Reynosa Customs Office, surrendered to U.S. authorities and is serving as a cooperating witness, according to a source familiar with the matter consulted by Código Magenta. Pressure from Washington was key in Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum’s decision to remove Adán Augusto López as coordinator of the Morena party’s Senate caucus. Is it a coincidence that the government has barred the Morena senator from campaigning in the states of the First Electoral District—that is, the states that benefited from funding from Sergio Carmona’s network in 2021?
This week, the government leaked a crucial decision regarding the 2027 election. Ricardo Monreal, a pragmatic politician who had a serious falling out with Adán Augusto López last year, will be responsible for coordinating Morena’s campaigns in the states of the First Electoral District: Baja California, Baja California Sur, Chihuahua, Durango, Jalisco, Nayarit, Sinaloa, and Sonora. The message to Adán Augusto López could not be clearer. Publicly, Mayor Sheinbaum maintains that there are no investigations against the former Secretary of the Interior. Privately, however, the federal government has turned against Adán Augusto López.
In September 2025, when N+ Televisa published a report with confidential data under the control of the Tax Administration Service (SAT) regarding Adán Augusto López’s multimillion-dollar tax evasion, the senator issued an implicit threat against President Sheinbaum: “I do know who is behind this, I know why they’re doing it, but as we say in the countryside: ‘every dog has its day’… I am a fundamental part of a movement, and of course, all these kinds of attacks have only one objective: to damage the movement. Now it turns out the big fish is shooting at the guns.” Months later, the friendly fire from the National Palace reached Adán Augusto López.
