The Secretary of Economy and Innovation of Baja California, Kurt Honold Morales, stated to business leaders that the vocation of Playas de Rosarito “is no longer tourism,” noting that Tijuana’s growth has directly impacted the municipality’s economic dynamics.
During his participation in the second ordinary session of the Rosarito Business Coordinating Council (CCE), the state official explained that, although tourism remains important, Rosarito must rethink its focus and diversify its economy.
He maintained that the urban development of the neighboring municipality has extended southward, which necessitates defining a new vocation for the so-called Fifth Municipality; and in this regard, he proposed promoting “well-designed and structured” industrial parks, taking advantage of the available labor in the Santa Fe area (bordering Tijuana), and considering the Mazatlán Ejido as a strategic location due to the legal certainty of its land titles.
Honold Morales pointed out that attracting industry would reduce dependence on tourism and generate economic stability in the face of potential downturns in that sector. He added that the port’s potential is also being analyzed as part of the development strategy.
The secretary thanked the president of the business organization, Juan Santana Bosquett, for the invitation to the meeting, where topics related to the growth and economic promotion of Playas de Rosarito were discussed.
He indicated that the State Secretariat of Economy and Innovation will continue working in coordination with the business sector to strengthen opportunities in the region.
