Four vehicles and two buses—one from the Omnibus de Ixtepec S.A. de C.V. line and the other from Istmeños—were burned in the violence perpetrated this morning by armed civilians in this city in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, Oaxaca.

According to passengers, four armed individuals boarded the bus as it was heading to the municipality of El Espinal, near the La Reforma housing development, and forced them off before setting it on fire.

Minutes later, in various locations throughout the city, four private vehicles—three cars and a pickup truck—were set ablaze.

Also, on the La Ventosa-Matías Romero Trans-Isthmus Federal Highway, near the town of Mazahua, a semi-trailer truck and a tanker truck were vandalized with fire in full view of several motorists.

The municipal government of Juchitán, Oaxaca, headed by Miguel Sánchez Altamirano, reported that these acts of violence could be related to the violence that has erupted in various parts of the country.

For its part, the State Attorney General’s Office indicated that, following the violent events, an operation called “Operation Hunter” was deployed with the intention of safeguarding the peace of the residents of this municipality.

The tactical operation involves the joint participation of all three levels of government: the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection (SSPC); the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office (FGEO); the Secretariat of National Defense (DEFENSA); the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR); the National Guard; and the Municipal Police.

“We will not allow criminal groups to destabilize the peace of our regions through fear. We are working in complete unity with federal authorities to ensure that these acts do not go unpunished. To the families of Juchitán and to the transport workers, we say firmly: you are not alone; you have the full support and strength of the State to protect your safety and your property.”

These acts of violence generated fear and panic among the citizens, who called on the authorities to maintain social peace. Stores in the city center remain closed, and it is still unknown whether or not classes will be held this Monday.
