At least three vehicles were set on fire by armed individuals on the Cancún-Mérida bypass, heading towards the Leona Vicario area in the municipality of Puerto Morelos. The vehicles were rendered unusable. No injuries or fatalities were reported.
The incident was reported to the 911 emergency number, which triggered a response from firefighters and security forces to the Cancún-Mérida highway, near a company identified as Gas Imperial, at the entrance to the city. Civilians who witnessed the attack were at the scene and suffered nervous breakdowns.
According to initial reports, the perpetrators were traveling in several vehicles and set fire to the vehicles parked on the road.
The area was secured by officers from the Benito Juárez Secretariat of Citizen Security and Transit as first responders. State and federal forces, including personnel from the Navy, the Mexican Army, Civil Protection, and municipal traffic officers, subsequently arrived to establish a perimeter and prevent risks to third parties.
Authorities kept the affected section of the road closed to traffic while they worked to extinguish the fire and remove the damaged vehicles.
Unofficially, authorities consulted indicated possible links between the attack and criminal groups with a presence in the region and originating in Jalisco. In that context, information also surfaced—without official public confirmation as of press time—regarding an alleged federal operation in Jalisco that reportedly resulted in the death of a leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), as well as the burning of vehicles and roadblocks in several states across the country.
Authorities are continuing their investigations to determine who was responsible for and the motive behind the attack on the Cancún-Leona Vicario corridor. The security operation in the area has been reinforced, and the situation remains under close monitoring.
Unofficially, authorities indicated that the attack may be linked to previous crimes in the city involving burning vehicles and firearms. As of press time, no arrests had been reported.
