A young woman was arrested for attacking a therian, dressed as a dog, during a large gathering of this community held in the Yucatecan capital on Saturday night.

After throwing kibble and eggs at the therian and openly expressing her disapproval, the confrontation escalated into a physical altercation with the person accompanying the therian.

“Do you want some kibble? Would you like some kibble? (…) Who’s in favor of therians?” she shouted in front of the crowd, who had come to the Monument to the Flag specifically to observe the Yucatecan therians.

Police officers from the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) arrested her after the physical and verbal assault against the therian and its companion.

People dressed as unicorns, dogs, rabbits, and bears attended the gathering, but some kept their distance.

“A way to express oneself”

Mariana, a 12-year-old girl—dressed in a cat mask and tail—attended the gathering with her father and said that being a Therian is a way to express oneself.

“Don’t let people intimidate you. Just feel free to do what you want without worrying about other people’s opinions,” she declared.

Her father, Luis Ramírez, expressed his support for Mariana, explaining that he accompanied her to the gathering because he wanted to meet other masked people.

“I think there’s a difference between discrimination and ignorance. We’re so engrossed in our phones that when we go out to see things from a human perspective, when we put on a mask to feel different, to feel less attacked for our ideas, this is what happens,” he remarked.
