Following the road blockade in the Villa Unión district on Sunday afternoon, Mayor Estrella Palacios Domínguez assured the public that the situation is under control and that authorities have decided to reinforce checkpoints on the highways leading to the port.

She stated that National Guard troops will be reinforcing security on the Mazatlán-Culiacán, Mazatlán-Durango, and Mazatlán-Tepic highways.

“The situation here in Mazatlán is under control thanks to a containment operation. We are reinforcing security on the main highways. At the Peacebuilding Roundtable, we were informed that the number of checkpoints on the highways leading to Mazatlán will be increased.”

The mayor urged the public to carry on with their activities as normal and to stay informed through official channels of all three levels of government.

Palacios Domínguez added that on Monday, the Ministry of Public Education and Culture (Sepyc) reported a 30 percent absenteeism rate in schools in the port city.

She said that some private schools, as a preventative and internal measure, decided to suspend classes.

“Tomorrow (Tuesday), students can go to classes without any problem. We will be closely monitoring the situation. The Peacebuilding Roundtable’s work will remain in place. We trust that everything will continue peacefully here in Mazatlán.”

The mayor of Mazatlán said that dozens of people remain stranded at the various bus terminals, and that the municipal DIF (Family Services) has provided them with food (250 meals on Sunday night).

She said that bus departures are gradually resuming, depending on the destination city.

For his part, Mazatlán’s Secretary of Public Security, Jaime Othoniel Barrón Valdez, said that the roadblock in Villa Unión, following the killing of Nemesio Oseguera, alias “El Mencho,” in Jalisco by the federal government, resulted in six tractor-trailers, two private vehicles, and a bus being set on fire.

The police commander said that clearing the highway took approximately three hours and indicated that the area was reinforced with additional state and federal agents.
