The San Cristóbal de Las Casas City Council approved the creation and swore in the Citizens’ Subcommittee that will coordinate the organization of the celebrations for the city’s 500th anniversary, planned for 2028, in a session led by Mayor Fabiola Ricci Diestel.

The new body will be composed of representatives from various sectors, including businesspeople, artists, artisans, academics, athletes, and community members, who will participate in the development of a Master Plan to be presented to the Governor of Chiapas, Eduardo Ramírez Aguilar, with the goal of coordinating cultural, tourism, and social activities leading up to the anniversary.

The subcommittee will be coordinated by chronicler and historian Miguel Ángel Muñoz Luna and envisions a commemorative program from March 15 to April 26, 2028, with international participation from countries such as Spain, France, and Guatemala, as well as events in the central park, traditional neighborhoods, and ecotourism areas. The activities will be organized around five themes: art and multiculturalism; tourism and economic development; education, science, and technology; urban development and the environment; and peace and community strengthening. Municipal authorities indicated that planning is beginning now to ensure an inclusive celebration that reflects the city’s history and diversity.
