A sculpture commissioned by the mayor of Morena, Fabiola Ricci, who paid nearly 500,000 pesos to her sister Blanca Ricci, has been the subject of ridicule and memes since its installation at the site of the Los Cantaritos statue in the Monte de los Olivos neighborhood, which was demolished in 2024.
The weekly newspaper Mirada Sur published invoices showing that Fabiola paid her sister Blanca over 478,000 pesos to create the sculpture of a reclining woman’s head, entitled “Spring Dream.”
Blanca Ricci, who is also the director of the San Cristóbal Museum (Musac), received 478,211.96 pesos for the sculpture, which was installed at the site of the Los Cantaritos statue, as it was known to local residents.
But just hours after the sculpture was placed there, city residents expressed their displeasure with criticism and memes on social media. Someone called the work “The Broken Neck,” while another said it was the face of Mayor Jerónima Toledo, also from the Morena party, who governed from 2018 to 2021. Yet another said it was a sculpture in honor of Wendy Guevara.
Among the most popular memes, one internet user said that Blanca Ricci’s work was a likeness of Ozzy Osbourne, who died on Tuesday.
To date, Mayor Fabiola Ricci has not stated which woman the sculpture was intended to honor.
