In Mexico, an average of 147 insured vehicles were stolen every day over the past 12 months, according to data from the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS). Thefts of insured vehicles decreased by 15% compared to the same period last year.

Between February 2025 and January 2026, 20,200 insured vehicles were reported stolen using violence, and 24,400 vehicles were stolen while parked. These figures highlight the importance of exercising caution when choosing a vehicle model and purchasing car insurance.

According to the AMIS (Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions) Auto Theft and Accident Report, five sub-brands lead the list of insured vehicles most frequently stolen while parked:

Nissan Versa (2,163 cases)
Kenworth (1,946)
Nissan NP300 (1,470)
Bajaj 111-250 (1,411)
Nissan March (1,163)

Meanwhile, the models most frequently stolen using violence, primarily heavy vehicles, were:

Kenworth (1,113)
Toyota Hilux Pickup (555)
Freightliner (521)
Dry Van Semi-Trailers (466)
International (476)

The insurance comparison website Rastreator points out that the area where the insurance policy is purchased is key, as companies in the sector consider the insured’s postal code. In areas with higher rates of vandalism, the risk increases, and consequently, so does the annual premium. Furthermore, the high volume of traffic in large cities like Mexico City increases the likelihood of accidents, while insurance is generally cheaper in smaller towns or rural areas.

The National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Financial Services Users (Condusef) warns that a vehicle’s theft history can increase the annual insurance premium by up to 30% if the model is among the most frequently stolen in the country.
