The government of Claudia Sheinbaum has accelerated work on the Buenavista Suburban Train line to the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA). The Lechería-AIFA section is nearing completion, according to federal authorities.

At the same time, the project includes its future expansion to Pachuca and plans to connect with Querétaro, creating a large-scale regional transportation network.

The Suburban Train linking Mexico City with AIFA is close to completing its first phase. Civil works are 92% complete, according to recent official data. Dynamic testing is about to be carried out to verify the safety and operation of the rail system, and commercial operations are expected to begin before or during Holy Week 2026.

The Agency for Trains and Integrated Public Transportation shared images on its social media accounts of the progress at the Buenavista terminal, from which trains will depart for the routes to Pachuca and Querétaro.

The comprehensive plan combines the completion of the Lechería-AIFA section with the start of two major extensions. On one hand, construction of the branch line to Pachuca began in March 2025, following the completion of technical studies and topographic surveys. On the other hand, the connection to Querétaro is projected to begin in 2027, aligned with the timelines of previous phases and the overall growth schedule of the rail system.

Currently, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) is maintaining the testing schedule for the Lechería-AIFA branch line until the first months of 2026.

In Buenavista, the tracks are being reinforced and work is progressing on the Multimodal Transfer Center (CETRAM), which will facilitate access and passenger flow once the new route is operational. According to authorities, the participation of the SICT, the Ministry of National Defense (Sedena), and military engineers has been key in the final stage of the project to address the technical challenges.

The government’s commitment aims to have the connection ready and operational before the 2026 Easter holiday period, strengthening public transportation between the region’s main urban centers.

The next key stage is the expansion into the state of Hidalgo. The proposed design includes a double-track electrified line, with trains capable of reaching speeds of 120 km/h.

The initial plan envisions two terminals—AIFA and Pachuca—and an intermediate station, which could be located in Tizayuca or Temascalapa, to benefit strategic locations in the State of Mexico and Hidalgo.

Project managers are analyzing the possibility of adding more stations in the future. This decision will depend on the development of demand and connectivity studies for other communities, adjusting the number of stops according to the identified needs.
