The city of Oaxaca awoke on March 12 to banners displaying the names of the state representatives who voted against Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum’s electoral reform.
The banners, very similar to the drug cartel banners that frequently appear throughout the country, exposed the Oaxaca legislators belonging to the Labor Party (PT) and the Green Party of Mexico (PVEM) who did not support the reform initiative.
Bearing the slogan “Traitors to the Nation,” several of these banners were placed along busy roads in the state.
They contained black and white photos of the accused representatives, with a red strip covering their eyes, just as a criminal’s identity is concealed.
More than one banner was placed on several bridges in the state, making them impossible to miss while driving on the roads. As of now, those responsible for putting them up are unknown.
The banners feature legislators and representatives from the three parties that, until recently, had been allies.
The names that stand out are:
Alejandro Avilés, of the Green Party (PVEM)
Margarita García, of the Labor Party (PT)
Raúl Bolaños-Cacho, of the Green Party (PVEM)
Maribel Martínez, of the PT
Aracely Cruz, of the PT
They were accused not only of being traitors but also of “voting against the electoral reform” and “voting against the people.”
These events arise in the context of recent controversies surrounding the breakdown of the alliance between Morena and the PT and PVEM after the electoral reform failed to pass in the Chamber of Deputies.
Like any constitutional reform, this proposal required a majority vote in the Chamber. However, despite Morena’s alliance with the PT and PVEM, it was suspected from the outset that the reform would lack the necessary support.
It was no surprise that the majority of votes to approve the reform was not reached; however, for the members of Morena this meant an evident break, as demonstrated by the state of Oaxaca.
