The municipal government, headed by Mayor Estefanía Mercado, announced the call for entries for the Second Annual Playa del Carmen Taco Festival 2026, which will take place on March 30 and 31 in Plaza 28 de Julio, with the state of Yucatán as the special guest.
During the presentation, municipal authorities and the organizing committee emphasized that this event aims to strengthen the local economy, promote the destination’s rich culinary offerings, and create spaces for family gatherings.
According to the press release, those participating in the press conference included Estefanía Hernández, Secretary of Economic Development and Investment Attraction; David Hernández, a member of the organizing committee; Fabiana Briseño, Secretary of Tourism; and Ernesto Martínez Cuéllar, Director of the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts, as well as representatives from various taco businesses.
“The call for entries is now open to everyone interested in participating. We have 50 spaces available, so we invite restaurants, taco stands, traditional cooks, and anyone who makes tacos and wants to share their culinary skills with the community,” said Estefanía Hernández.
The official highlighted that the first edition of the festival brought together more than 15,000 attendees and generated an economic impact of over one and a half million pesos, directly benefiting businesses in the local food sector.
“That is what we seek in our mayor’s administration: for people to prosper, for their families to have well-being, and for there to be spaces where they can grow and share their talent,” she stated.
The call for entries includes the participation of 50 exhibitors, who will be able to compete in a culinary contest in which a specialized jury will evaluate aspects such as flavor, texture, presentation, creativity, quality of ingredients, and salsas. The top three places will receive cash prizes.
As part of this year’s new features, a special pavilion dedicated to the state of Yucatán will be set up, along with a space for international tacos, where foreign residents can present creations inspired by their own cuisine, adapted to the traditional Mexican dish.
The festival will take place in Plaza 28 de Julio, in the heart of Playa del Carmen, and aims to establish itself as a permanent gastronomic event that strengthens the destination’s culinary identity.
Those interested in participating can register for free at the offices of the Secretariat of Economic Development and Investment Attraction, starting March 12th and until all available spaces are filled.
For her part, the Municipal Secretary of Tourism, Fabiana Briseño, emphasized the importance of these types of events in promoting the destination and strengthening collaboration among the economic, cultural, and tourism sectors.
“It is an honor to participate in initiatives that support traditional cooks, entrepreneurs, and all those who contribute to the rich gastronomic heritage of our city,” she commented.
Meanwhile, the director of the Municipal Institute of Culture and the Arts, Ernesto Martínez Cuéllar, announced that the festival will feature artistic performances, dance shows, and music, with the aim of providing a family-friendly atmosphere for residents and visitors.
Finally, the organizers invited the public, visitors, and media to join in and promote this event, which celebrates Mexican gastronomy, fosters culture, and contributes to local economic recovery.
