The State Civil Protection Secretariat announced that it will initiate legal proceedings against the mayor of San Cristóbal, Fabiola Ricci Diestel, her police force, and the Municipal Civil Protection personnel for violating safety regulations and disobeying legal orders.
In a statement, the Secretariat explained that the mayor, a member of the Morena party, acted irresponsibly by failing to enforce the legal closure of the Midnight Rodeo event through her municipal civil protection secretary and her team.
The Secretariat stated that the municipal authority arbitrarily opened the gates to allow attendees to enter, ignoring safety measures and the existing suspension order.
The state agency added that it disclaims all responsibility for any incident, accident, or risk that may occur during the event, placing the full responsibility on the mayor and her direct collaborators.
He maintained that “the safety of Chiapas families is non-negotiable,” while urging the municipal authorities “to prioritize the well-being of citizens above any other interest.”
State Civil Protection stated that “after conducting a verification visit this Saturday afternoon at the La Coleta bullring, located in San Cristóbal de Las Casas, the Midnight Rodeo event was suspended.”
They explained that “it was confirmed that the event lacked the minimum safety conditions necessary to guarantee the safety of attendees, such as the absence of a Specific Civil Protection Program, liability insurance, firefighting equipment and emergency signage, and the lack of medical services and mandatory preventative measures.”
Therefore, they added, “with the support of various security forces and Civil Protection, the event was immediately suspended and the corresponding financial penalty was imposed on the organizers.”
